Because Harry & Edna are well known for their Wartime Kitchen impression, they where asked by the BBC in March 2006 to take part in a wartime special of the popular BBC television show Ready Steady Cook.

Rather than being a historical programme, the BBC TV producer wanted the chefs to create modern menus using typical food items of the 1930s and 40s.

As you can image this included the wartime classic, powdered egg!
The format of the programme is to have 2 teams cook an exciting meal with limited ingredients in only 20 minutes.

One team consisted of Harry and celebrity chef Phil Vickery against Edna and celebrity chef Paul Rankin.

The chiefs cooked up some wonderful food including a lovely dish which featured fried parsnip skins, which even Harry who hates parsnip enjoyed. Paul Rankin said this kind of cooking with wartime ingredients reminded him of the traditional Irish cooking he grew up with.

Naturally the majority of the programme featured the food but Harry & Edna were asked to give a special wartime feel to the programme.

Harry & Edna appeared on the show wearing our original wartime clothes and the presenter Ansley Harriet asked Edna about questions the wartime food rationing system.

Edna also explained the important role of the WVS in educating the public on how cook.

Before the programme we were asked by the Researchers for our advice on wartime cooking, rationing and the need not to waste a single bit of food.

Harry was very pleased that Paul used the pea pod shells for soup and hoped Phil Vickery will use the apple cores left over from the cookery demo. After the show Harry & Edna were thanked by the producer for their expert advice and congratulated them on their screen presence. You can imagine they were very flattered by her kind comments.

In 2008 Harry & Edna worked with Phil Vickery again in an ITV 'This Morning' feature called "
A taste of history". The programme was filmed in Harry & Edna's own kitchen.
