Harry & Edna where asked by the BBC in March 2006 to take part in a wartime special of the popular BBC television show Ready Steady Cook. Rather than being a historical programme, the BBC TV producer wanted the chefs to create modern menus using typical food items of the 1930s and 40s.
As you can image this included the wartime classic, powdered egg! The format of the programme is to have 2 teams cook an exciting meal with limited ingredients in only 20 minutes. One team consisted of Harry and celebrity chef Phil Vickery against Edna and celebrity chef Paul Rankin.
The chiefs cooked up some wonderful food including a lovely dish which featured fried parsnip skins, which even Harry who hates parsnip enjoyed. Paul Rankin said this kind of cooking with wartime ingredients reminded him of the traditional Irish cooking he grew up with.
Naturally the majority of the programme featured the food but Harry & Edna were asked to give a special wartime feel to the programme. Harry & Edna appeared on the show wearing our original wartime clothes and the presenter Ansley Harriet asked Edna about questions the wartime food rationing system.
Harry & Edna worked with Phil Vickery again in an ITV 'This Morning' feature called "A taste of history". The programme was filmed in Harry & Edna's own kitchen.
