Victory in the Garden

During the war the Victory Garden was the name given to gardens which had been turned into vegetables patches. Harry & Edna have created a transportable 'Victory in the Garden' display to portray their 'Victory in the Garden' living history / scenario.

Their re-enactment recalls the daily effort in keeping the dinner table supplied with meals; 'Edna' explains how our grandmothers devised frugal wartime recipes, while Harry works in the Victory Garden growing the essential vegetables if Britain is not to starve.

To complement the display Harry and Edna perform a 40 minute scenario with Edna the Land Girl giving a practical dimension to Harry's 'interactive' talk based on wartime farming.

Although Hitler is enemy number one, to the wartime Victory Gardener & farmer it is the pigeon who is most definitely enemy number 2. Indeed the atmosphere in the allotment becomes tense when Harry and a pigeon come face to face.

Edna a skilled horse woman has also performed at farm museums working the heavy horses. Harry & Edna's 'Victory in the Garden' is featured in the
War on Waste web page.
